I don't know about you, but my introductory years with gaming seemed to coincide with my introductory years with music. To this day, there are certain albums I can't hear without strongly associating them with D&D. Styx's "Kilroy was Here", for instance, evokes a strong mental image of myself and three buddies (sadly, I can only remember one of their names, Andrew, whatever happened to those guys anyway?) exploring the Isle of Dread on the doorstep of our cabin in summer camp ('83). Zep's Zoso album seems to be inextricably linked with the memories of my first forays into Judges Guild's fantastic Wilderlands. "Back in Black" must have been stuck on "repeat" during the garage-gaming days of high school (and I seem to remember Asmodeus himself uttering the line just before a brawl between the PCs and every arch-demon in the MM). Heck, one of the guys even designed a whole adventure around the lyrics of "Hotel California".
What music reminds you of gaming?
Man, those Yes album covers were great. I always associated them with Planescape.

ReplyDeleteI was thinking of this one as well. "Ramble On" does it for me every time. Oddly enough, in a post-LOTR universe, I picture elves and orcs dying in slow motion every time I hear Enya (there is actually a nearby building I go to for work-related meetings that has Enya playing in the lobby so this happens more often that one would think).

ReplyDeletegreat albums. the funny thing is that we never listened to music while gaming bitd. and today I still don't put on the tunes, as I find it distracting. but i'm clearly in the minority
ReplyDeleteBITD it was mostly Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, & Uriah Heep, but also medieval/ren music from the library.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, I'm having a bit of a "second childhood" and discovering lots of heavy metal that is D&D/fantasy/mythology inspired. Amon Amrath, 3 Inches of Blood, Skeletonwitch, & The Sword figure in my latest D&D mixtape, in addition to the aforementioned.
I don't actually play this stuff when we're gaming, though, too distracting.
Iron Maiden's "Powerslave" makes me want to run a pyramid dungeon right away.
