These were the best mini sets ever! I can remember saving for weeks to buy myself the Woodland Adventurers set ($20) and painting that ranger to with my goldenrod character sheet...
I purchased the box and two miniatures from 2007 Females back in 1982 as my first miniatures. I also later managed to buy the "Action Art: Dungeoneers" which I believe uses some miniatures from he Dungeon Explorers set. Recently (see my Blog) I was able to buy the Dungeoneers set again and look forward to painting these minis again.
We were "Grenadier Only" for a few years since the local hobby store didn't carry anything else BITD. You show me a character figure from the Dungeon or Woodlands Explorers sets, I'll give you the character's name, the player's name, and his entire shtick. God I loved those minis!
I also had a number of these sets when I was a kid. They were excellent! However, I knew a few kids that would chew on the swords and staves and such. Not a good thing.
Grenadiers & Dungeon Dwellers are the best figures, they had classic molds of the early concepts of what fantasy was to look like. If you compare them to Partha's they are skinner and a bit shorter. I managed to get a few sets off of ebay over the past few years, getting the paint off some of them is a pain.
Blast from the past indeed! I'm painting the Woodland Adventurers #5003 for a friend. 5 done so far. If you want to see: http://Facebook.com/TheMassiveMiniPaintingProject
I hereby nominate this, for "Most Awesome Post of the Weekend."
ReplyDeleteI remember buying some of the sets back in the 80's. Wish I had kept them. They were pretty cool even unpainted.

I remember wanting to get these but only having money for single miniatures.
ReplyDeleteI picked up the Grenadier Fighting Men boxed set at a gaming auction last year, and I'm slowly painting my way through it. Here's the first 3 dudes.
ReplyDeleteI had most, if not all of those at one point.
ReplyDelete--Fun times. :)
Thanks for posting these. :D
Wow, serious flashback. Makes me want to start collecting minatures again. Don't do that.

ReplyDeleteVery cool images. Never saw any of these in my youth, I have to admit.

Very nice artwork. Back when D & D was for the players, not the grossly overcommercialised bullshit that it is today.
