Get off my lawn(revised)!

Whew, for a moment there I forgot my own advice to stay out of these things. BtBG will now be returning to its neutrally-zoned megadungeon beneath the Swiss alps because a) as I said, the folks involved can take care of themselves, and b) I feel a little like Michael Moore picking on poor old senile Charlton Heston.

  1. It's human nature. If you get slapped, you slap back. Get two coffins ready.

It seems Robert J Kuntz was distancing himself from an interpretation of "OSR" he felt was being put forth. Jim from LotFP responded in kind. Gunfire was exchanged. Tim Kask was apparently up on the belltower with his rifle.

My mistake, make it three coffins.

However, it started is irrelevant. The "opposing sides" are really part of the same "coin". Opinions may be what they may, some will carry their banners, others their torches. Let it run its course. Its an act of cleansing.

Like in the movie The Seven Samurai, the Samurai & Bandits wage war and kill each otehr off. The villagers (gaming community) will always be here.

Trust in God, but keep your powder dry.

  2. I commented after reading your post beofre its revision.

Ha ha ha! Moore & Heston! It's abit like that. People are people, so alike & so different in their nature & philosophy.

There's no point in condemning someone because it will only happen to you down the road.

Let's just play! Let God sort them out!

  3. I'm doing what I usually do in situations like that - staying out of the way!

  4. Man, why does everything have to be qualified in this goddamned hobby? AD&D is better than 4e, old-school is better than new-school, chocolate is better than peanut butter. It's all preference.

  5. Post edit: Yeah, that's probably for the best. There's a reason that I read yours, Zak's, Michael Curtis' and ChicagoWiz's blogs, and it's because you folks tend to shy away from the saber rattling and focus on the gaming. :)

  6. I found watching Michael Moore asking a confused Heston questions that Heston couldn't answer made me uncomfortable. It was a bit like watching someone who can't defend themselves get picked on. Long after the movie ended, though, I had a revelation. Heston was old and confused and not as sharp as he used to be, but he was also the spokesperson for one of the most powerful political lobbying organizations in the US --- what the NRA does affects the lives of US citizens. So saying that he should simultaneously be allowed to be a spokesperson for a lobby group AND immune to criticism on account of his Alzheimers means that Heston's right to enjoy his dignity as an old and confused man trumps his responsibility to answer questions about what the NRA does (an organization that uses him as its public face). If Heston was not mentally incompetent enough to answer questions, he should not have publically served in the NRA as a 'spokesperson.' That said, watching Moore pursue those questions and seeing a confused Heston get up and shuffle out of the room did not make me "like" Michael Moore at that moment either.
What I know of the current OSR debate does not endear either side to me very much. So it is very much like the Heston/Moore confrontation in 'Bowling for Columbine.' I'm just not sure who is more like Moore and who is more like Heston.
I guess its time for me to shuffle out of the room.

  7. I feel like I missed something. Links to the discussion where this all went down please.

  8. Thomas, you're not the only one. Well, "miss" would be incorrect, as I can't say I feel a loss, but "not in the loop."

  10. I'm encouraged that my weeding out of certain blogs makes these things mostly unknown to me these days as well. I'm happier not knowing.

  11. @Thomas - Someone from TSR's past took exception with someone else claiming the OSR is producing material on a par with TSR.

  12. I think the actual claim was "better than TSR", not "on par with TSR". :)

But irregardless, the latest melodrama is as ridiculous as the previous ones. Better to stay out of it. :)

  13. Anytime I watch Michael Moore ask anyone questions, I imagine he's thinking "I'd rather be eating a cheeseburger....no, make that a BUCKET of cheeseburgers. And fries. "
