The Old-School Gamer's Microbrew Recommendation Post
While we may play the "traditional" RPGs of our youth, we seldom indulge, anymore, in the "traditional" gaming snacks: Mountain Dew and Cheetos, or similar stuff.
We're older now, and a little more concerned with our waistlines and cholesterol levels.
Not saying there aren't plenty of holdouts in the soda/chips arena, nothing wrong with that at all, but, in the 00's I'm definitely seeing more sushi, veggies & dip, artisan cheeses (some Refs are even preparing gourmet meals for their players!) and the like at game tables. And big mugs of coffee, bottles of spring water,
And beer :) Not case-at-a-time swill, either, but wonderful microbrews and imports you want to share and savor and take your time with.
Lately I've been quite taken with Flying Dog's Snakedog IPA, pictured above.
Please share your current favorite game-table beverage, or latest cool discovery, in the comments section below.

I love a good IPA, but it is difficult to get American microbrews here in Italy. Fortunately, I am pertty close ot Germany so I'm not at a shortage for good beers. Currently I really enjoy Winklerbrau's Heffepils. It is a mix between a heffeweisen and a pilsner. If I'm in the mood for something on the dark side, I like Amstedtten Dunkle Dopplebock.
ReplyDeleteIPA's are too weak from my blood. I always go dark, even if its just medium dark or red. I highly recommend Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager. My personal all time fave.
ReplyDeleteMy gaming group and I prefering beer. Ok, we are Bavarians. ;) I prefer Rother Bräu, a pilsner, Kupferbier, which is more a sweeter one, Kreuzbergbier, an original cloister beer, sometimes some "exotic ones" like Kilkenny or Guinness, but I really love shandy, meads or viking blood, which is a mixture of mead and cherry juice. *thumbsup*
ReplyDeleteAnd sometimes, for some "Call of Cthulhu" sessions, I like some absinth. Yeah!
Cheers!
Often, I bring out a bottle of home made mead. I get some very good local cider and mix it with local honey to make a type of mead called Cyzer- its a favorite. We tend to drink locally brewed beer though. There are a lot of small breweries in Western MA. Favorites are: Beer of the Gods from High and Mighty Brewing, Red Giant from Element Brewing and Berkshire Brewing makes a coffee porter we like.
ReplyDeleteFor gaming, you've gotta have Hobgoblin Beer. The bottle even has picture of a hobgoblin on it!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm a homebrewing guy, so that's my choice of drink most nights. Otherwise, I good, hoppy IPA really hits the spot. Plenty of microbrews here in Oregon, gotta love it.
ReplyDeleteOur every bi-weekly Saturday group actually does crafts homebrew just for our game sessions, we also take turns cooking a feast before each session. We have been going strong for about 8yrs, though I will admit that on occasion sessions have turned into swill fests after a couple of hours of gaming, but there is nothing wrong with that every now & again (unless your the DM & in your drunken stupor decide to hand out inappropriately powerful magic items and the like...) =)
ReplyDeleteWarsteiner Dunkle for the drinking crowd, and sweet tea when the teetotalers are in session. Spinach-artichoke dip with Mission tortilla chips, and a proper dinner of whatever the wife or I have decided to cook.(penne rustica, chili, pizza margherita, etc)
ReplyDeleteI mix my blog posts topics with the two most common being gaming and beer. The beer has notes about latest beer tastings. The last two were from the Sammy Adams winter mix pack - Chocolate Bock & Blackberry Witbier.
ReplyDeleteI'm not an IPA fan - too hoppy for me. I prefer the malty side of life. Though I have heard good things about Flying Dog brand. I definitely need to try some non-IPA stuff there.
Jealous of Ian, I really like Oregon microbrews. Rogue is like my all time favorite. Just saying this makes me crave a Dead Guy Ale.
Cheers!
I'm open minded when it comes to beer. However, living in Cleveland I am currently saving my great lakes Christmas ale for Wednesday game nights only so that this.limited beer lasts longer.
ReplyDeleteFranziskaner (with the happy monk on the label), Bacchus kriekenbier, Bruegel amber ale, or Chimay blue label.
ReplyDelete@Dylan - we toured the Great Lakes brewery a couple of summers ago - awesome place, and a great restaurant too. I've been a fan of their Dortmunder Gold ever since.
ReplyDeleteFor awhile, our vegetarian friends hosted our game. They always made delicious soup. It was awesome.
ReplyDeleteIn the beverage department, I am a big cider fan. Woodchuck 802 is a favorite, as is Magner's (Bulmers in Ireland)
Franziskaner Weissbier (I second this) or
ReplyDeleteAyinger Hefe-Weizen / Weihenstephaner
Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout
Stone IPA (ratebeer 100)
Lagunitas Sonoma Farmhouse Hop Stoopid (ratebeer 100)
Chouffe IPA Tripel / Duvel
I'm in Colorado so many more local beers to savor... I brew myself too.
I play in London pubs, I find Chiswick bitter to be ideal for my gaming needs - full-bodied but not so strong I get plastered.
