In a cage match! No, not really; in court.
Stumbling across
this link on a
messageboard, I thought it might be an interesting thing to preserve.
Obviously, this was an unfortunate episode in the game's history, and one of all to many such episodes, but its interesting to read nonetheless. This document is public record.
Arneson v. Gygax
Good stumbling; thank you, and for the link.
ReplyDeletethat's a bummer. Everyone always talks about "Gary and Dave" as if they died best friends.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone decipher the decision out of the legalese? {failed my Decipher Script roll}
@Meatloaf: Seriously? If people talk about them as if they were best friends, then it's some serious revisionist history. There was a time when you had to be careful to schedule them far apart (physically) at major conventions so they wouldn't run into each other on-site.
ReplyDeleteDidnt notice this until now. Thanks for posting about it. This document is from 1979, but I think the last trial (out of 3) was in 1982. Interestingly, Gygax did approach Arneson in the mid 80s suggesting that TSR would publish Blackmoor again (resulting in the DA modules).
ReplyDeleteI might be wrong about 1982. An out of court settlement was reached between Arneson and Gygax in 1981 (IIRC), but apparently there was another case between Arneson and Lorraine Williams' TSR after Gary had been forced out of the company.
